The first fishing game, “Reel Fishing” was released in 1996 by Natsume for the PlayStation. In the game you had joined a bass fishing tournament and you were competing against a series of artificial anglers. You could choose where in the lake you wanted to fish and what types of lures you wanted to use. Typically casting consisted of choosing your angle and throwing the lure and you would reel the lure in while maneuvering it around obstacles. Fish were represented by a dark shadow and you could judge the size of a fish by the size of the shadow. Once hooked, you would reel in the fish while watching you line's tension. You didn’t' want to reel in a fish to fast, as you could break your line and lose your fish and lure. This game series was quite popular and spawned several sequels with 9 games being created in the series total. The series was a perfect fit for the Wii, with the Wii controller serving as a fishing rod.

The success of the “Reel Fishing” franchise brought about Bass fishing by Sega in 1997 for the arcade and “Marine Fishing” in 1997. Marine fishing for the Dreamcast innovative in that Sega created a Dreamcast fishing rod controller for the game which was one the first uses of a motion sensitive controller for a console, making it a precursor to the Wii.
